Cannabis is now legal, and responsible adults deserve safe access to cannabis while they live, work and play in Kingston. Kingstonians voted to legalize cannabis by electing Liberal MP Mark Garretsen, where it was Liberal mandate to legalize cannnabis. We should not be forced to travel to another city to safely access regulated cannabis. This is what we want, this is what we deserve!
Because we need to keep our community and children safe!
A black market will thrive in areas where access to cannabis is limited to online only sales. Our youth will continue to have open and illegal access to recreational cannabis. Children are not allowed to even enter legal stores (which will be 19+ and require carding at the door). Store owners will also take extra precautions to ensure anyone under 19 is not able to see any cannabis products.
Because online only sales are elitist and exclusionary!
Don't get us wrong, some people (especially in remote areas) depend on online ordering and are used to it. This is not the case with everyone, however. Adults who do not have access to a computer or credit cards will not be able to order cannabis, which forces them to deal with the black market. Everyone deserves regulated cannabis in safe and accessible places with our community.
Because the cannabis we consume should be taxed and regulated!
Diverting sales to the black market or unregulated dispensaries means that we won't collectively benefit from tax dollars accumulated in our city. We need better funding for mental health services, roads, sidewalks, education and so much more. Society as a whole will benefit from both HST and excise taxes imposed on legal cannabis sales. Additionally, Kingston will receive a portion of the excise tax generated from cannabis sales. If they decide to opt out, they will receive none.
Because it is a huge economic opportunity!
Small, privately owned businesses will be able to open retail stores. Auxiliary businesses like restaurants, hotels, theaters, and other tourism will all enjoy a boost from cannabis businesses being in town. Kingston is a beautiful place to explore, and we don't want visitors to pass right through if we don't opt in! Again, Kingston will receive a portion of the excise tax generated from cannabis sales. If they decide to opt out, they will receive none.
Opting out of legal cannabis sales is opting into illegal cannabis sales.
